What does the Learning on Country Program mean to your community?

The Students of Ramingining School have the opportunity to experience how Indigenous Rangers conduct care for country.

Why is it important?

LoC gives the students of Ramingining School the opportunity to be out on country and experience traditional cultural practices.

What type of LoC activities happen at your community?

Care for Country with ASRAC – Early Season Burning, Weed Management, Sacred Site protection, feral animal management, Sea Patrol and other land management activities.

Tell us about the Rangers supporting the LoC Program. What lessons are they teaching the students about your country?

The Rangers help the LoC students understand best land management practices, such as how to identify invasive weed species such as Mimosa, Gamba and Candlebush, which greatly affect biodiversity on the Arafura Swamp.

The Rangers also teach the students about feral animal management and the impact that animals such as buffaloes have on the environment and water sources.

The students also work with the Rangers to collect and manage rubbish, understanding that rubbish ends up in the oceans and kills wildlife.

What future training or work opportunities are available in your community for LoC students?

LoC students can complete the Coxswain Grade 2 course which opens up diverse opportunities for students such as Rangers, Police, fishing tour guide, Eco-tour guide, barge operator or even Customs Border Force Officer. We are currently seeking funding for a Maritime program with the aim of owning our own boats to train Ramingining students in Maritime Operations.

What is something you are most proud of about LoC in your community?

The strong relationship and collaboration between our Rangers and School to deliver quality outcomes for our students and the community.
